One of our newly finished projects (3224 W Belle Plaine Ave.) gives us the perfect opportunity to talk about making the most out of your backyard. This property fits snugly into its family-friendly, cozy neighborhood- as does its backyard.
The reality is that most homeowners don’t have acres and acres of land that make up their backyards. But just because your backyards may not inspire a sing-along of a Dixie Chicks song (Wide Open Spaces) doesn’t mean you have to feel cramped. And we have proof…
Take a look at that- a beautiful view and perfectly clean lawn all in one. The porch overlooks the neighborhood as well as the back yard. It’s large enough for entertaining and relaxing, but doesn’t overtake the backyard.
This view gives you an even better idea of the space we had to work with and what we did to take advantage of every square inch.
For much needed storage we dedicated part of the space to a roomy shed. We spread mulch around the shed to make the lawn maintenance that much easier and added a little greenery.
The layout of the sidewalk leaves the rest of the yard wide open for kids to play, dogs to run around and parties to be held. With a smaller yard it’s important that you dedicate space to every need you want met.
How can you make the most of your backyard? Start by making a list of what you want your backyard to accomplish. Do you need storage? Do you like to entertain? Do you have outdoor pets? Once you have a clear picture of the needs you want your backyard to meet you’re ready to get started transforming it.
• Give each need its own space just as we did with the storage shed, green lawn and porch.
• Make sure that each element leaves room for the rest. Everything needs to have its place.
• Get rid of clutter. Clutter is the single most reason that people can’t fully enjoy their backyards.
Follow these tips and you’ll be able to create your very own backyard oasis.
